Moquegua Excursion
Moquegua Excursion
We'll pick you up between 5:40 and 6 am at your hotel in Arequipa to begin our excursion to Moquegua. Let's go!
After a three-hour drive, we'll arrive in Moquegua, a city with an important past. First, it was a Tiahuanaco and Wari territory, then Chiribaya and Estuquiña, invaded by the Incas and conquered by the Spaniards, occupied by Chileans, and finally returned to Peru. An exciting history!
We'll begin our guided tour in Plaza de Armas, the main square, where we'll learn about the legacy of the different civilizations that have called Moquegua home. We'll see the Matriz Church and the Contisuyo Museum, which exhibits ceramics, textiles and even mummies from pre-Inca times.
The tour then takes us to the Church of Santo Domingo, inside which we'll observe the relics of Santa Fortunata and learn about the miracles that made this figure the patron saint of Moquegua. Afterward, we'll take a break so you can have lunch on your own.
Following lunch, we'll go to the neighborhood of Belén, the most traditional area of this Peruvian city. Here we can admire its typical houses with colorful balconies, such as the home of Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera and Casa de la Cultura. Fun fact: the latter preserves the oldest jar in South America!
To finish the tour with a bang, we'll make a stop at the Cristo Blanco viewpoint before heading back to Arequipa, where arrival at your hotel is scheduled for 8 pm.
