Ashlar Route & Culebrillas Canyon Tour
First of all, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Arequipa at your chosen time. We'll drive down the Uchumayo road until we reach the ashlar stone quarries. Here, we'll take a guided tour to learn all about the work of the quarrymen, whose trade dates back to ancient times.
The stones in this area have the unique trait that they can only be worked by hand, otherwise, they would break. The work of the quarrymen is to carve the stone to form the ashlars that'll later be used for the constructions that are typical of this part of Peru. Did you know that this material comes from the lava of the volcanoes that surround Arequipa?
Afterwards, we'll spend 30 minutes walking to our next destination. This is the Culebrillas Canyon, a ravine formed by nature and the passage of water. We'll go on a hike here through the rocky walls, which tower at a height of 50 (15 metres) to 65 feet (20 metres). In addition, we'll see the 1,000-year-old petroglyphs. The meaning behind these cave symbols engraved in the rock remains a mystery today...
Following a fascinating 4-hour tour, we'll return to the centre of Arequipa and drop you off near the Plaza de Armas.
