Antwerp Jewish Quarter Tour
Tour Description
At the indicated time, we’ll meet inside Antwerp Central Station to embark on a journey through the Jewish Quarter in which we'll uncover the unique history and vibrant culture of this important community in the city.
Antwerp is home to one of the largest Jewish populations in Europe, estimated at between 20,000 and 25,000 people. As we explore the Jewish Quarter, we'll gain a deeper understanding of their way of life and their significant contributions to the city.
Along the way, we’ll visit the Diamond District. Here, we'll discover the significant role the Jewish community has played in shaping Antwerp’s renowned diamond trade. Did you know that around 80% of the world’s rough diamonds have passed through this district? After World War II, the city's mayor invited Jewish families to return, many of whom were previously deeply involved in the diamond industry.
We'll also pass by the Monument to the Deported Citizens of Antwerp. This memorial, unveiled in 1997, honours the memory of the city’s Jewish citizens who were deported during the Holocaust. The depiction of burning Torah scrolls also serves as a reminder of the pogrom that occurred in 1941.
In front of this poignant reminder of the horrors faced by the Jewish community, we'll bring the tour to an end after a total of 2 hours.
