Acatenango Volcano 2-Day Trekking Route
Description
Day 1: Antigua Guatemala - Acatenango Volcano
At the designated time, we'll leave downtown Antigua and head by minibus to the village of La Soledad. It's located on the mountainside of the Acatenango volcano, the third largest in the country, which is 3976 metres high!
Are you excited to start hiking? The Acatenango volcano trekking route will consist of four stages on the first day and each stage will last approximately one hour.
Throughout the hike, we'll see how the landscape changes as we gain altitude. From the agricultural fields at the beginning to the cloud forests and the incredible views of other highland volcanoes, such as Atitlán, Tolimán or Tajamulco. To make sure we're well fuelled, halfway through the hike we'll enjoy a picnic of a chicken or vegetable burrito.
Once we've reached the altitude of 3700 metres (12,129 ft), we'll set up our tents and enjoy a hot tea or coffee. Finally, we'll rest in the camp and have a delicious dinner of pasta bolognese or a vegetarian pasta dish. The next day we'll continue the adventure!
Day 2: Acatenango Volcano - Antigua Guatemala
We'll wake up early and start the trekking route that will take us to the top of the Acatenango volcano. We'll hike until we reach the top of this impressive natural landscape. The views of the Guatemalan highlands are truly breathtaking. We'll cross challenging paths of shifting volcanic sand—every step will be an achievement!
If you wish, you can also make an additional climb of the Fuego volcano. In this case, we'll wake you up a little before 4 am and set off in the dark to the summit at 3900 metres (12,795 ft) above sea level. Please note that the difficulty of this route is high, and will be done without a guide, but you won't regret it when you see the impressive eruptions up close!
After admiring one of the best panoramic views of the country, we'll start the descent back to base camp for a well-deserved breakfast consisting of banana bread and a coffee. Once we get our strength back, we'll head back down to La Soledad.
We'll finish the activity back at the departure point in Antigua Guatemala arriving between 12:30 to 1 pm.
