On this day trip to Mangaratiba and the São João Marcos Archeological Park, we'll immerse ourselves in the Atlantic Forest and travel back in time to a city in ruins. It'll be a fascinating experience!
Day Trip Details
At the designated time we'll meet at Av. Júlio Maria, number 16, before starting our journey towards the Serra do Piloto, an environmental preservation area in Mangaratiba.
Our first stop will be the historical Estrada Imperial, built in the 17th century. This road features impressive scenic views and is a great example of the engineering of the time. Here, we'll go on a short walk to explore the Saco Bravo ruins, that date back to the colonial period.
After this, we'll head to the Imperial Viewpoint, where we'll get some of the most spectacular views of the region. From this point, you'll be able to see the Serra do Mar and discover why this location was a strategic point in the past.
The day trip will then continue to the Cachoeira dos Escravos, a waterfall surrounded by the Atlantic Forest. Apart from its natural beauty, this spot also has a rich history, as it was where enslaved people who worked on the construction of the road would rest. Next stop? Emporio da Barreira, a charming place where we'll learn more about the local culture.
We'll then make our way to the São João Marcos Archeological Park, located in the city of Río Claro, on the border with Mangaratiba. This ancient city, once one of the wealthiest in the state of Rio de Janeiro during the coffee boom, experienced a flood in 1940 and was forgotten for decades. Nowadays, it has reopened as an open-air museum and is the ideal place to take a journey into the past.
Lastly, we'll return to our initial meeting point in Angra dos Reis, where we'll say our goodbyes 8 hours after pickup.
