Discover the City of Romanticism and stroll through the streets that inspired Espronceda and Carolina Coronado with this guided tour of Almendralejo.
Almendralejo Guided Tour
We'll meet at the selected time at the main entrance of the Plaza de Toros to begin this guided tour of Almendralejo, capital of the Extremadura region of Tierra de Barros.
To begin with, we'll visit the Huerta Montero Prehistoric Sepulchre, considered to be one of the most unique burial sites in Extremadura. We'll learn all about this place of more than 4600 years old, used as a collective burial and place of worship in the Copper Age.
From this point, we'll enter the historic center of Almendralejo to learn about the history of this Badajoz city founded by the Order of Santiago after the end of the reign of Al Andalus. We'll visit the Gothic Church of Nuestra Señora de la Purificación, stopping in front of its Plateresque façade and Herrerian-style tower. We'll also see the Crucified Christ of Juan de Ávalos and the modern replica of the main altarpiece, destroyed during the Civil War.
Then we'll go to the Monsalud Palace, one of the most emblematic buildings of Almendralejo. Want to know why? Here's a hint: it has to do with the famous writer José de Espronceda.
Speaking of poets of Romanticism, we couldn't conclude the tour without visiting the Teatro Carolina Coronado, a modernist theater dedicated to this Almendralejo-born poet. We'll end the three-hour tour at this point.
