Cherchell + Tipasa Day Trip

At 8:30 pm, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Algiers and from there we'll head to Cherchell. In ancient times, this Mediterranean port city was known as Iol Caesarea: the capital of the Roman province of Caesarian Mauritania.

First, we'll take a tour of Cherchell to see its main points of interest, including the port and the Martyrs' Square. In this great esplanade, we'll see the façade of the El Rahman mosque or the 100 columns. This building has the appearance of a Christian church because, until 1574, it was the cathedral of St. Paul. The most curious thing of all is that this Catholic monument was built on top of an old Roman temple.

After the tour, we'll visit the Archaeological Museum of Cherchell to see the remains of its glorious imperial past. At the end of the tour of the permanent exhibition, which contains numerous sculptures and other outstanding pieces from antiquity, we'll take a short walk to the Roman ruins of Cherchell. At this site, we'll see the remains of the columns and other architectural elements that formed part of the forum, the baths and the temples of the ancient Roman city.

We'll continue the excursion towards the coastal city of Tipasa, where we'll enjoy a delicious lunch that'll include a plate of grilled fish. After lunch, we'll visit the Roman site of Tipasa, one of the main archaeological sites on the Algerian coast. In these ruins, declared a World Heritage Site, we'll discover what society and culture were like in Roman imperial times.

The last stop will be on the outskirts of Tipasa, where we'll see the Royal Mausoleum of Mauritania. Here lie the remains of the Berbers Juba II and Cleopatra Selene II, the respective king and queen of ancient Mauritania. Finally, we'll return to your hotel in Algiers, where the arrival is scheduled between 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm.
