Day Trip to Joya de Cerén & San Andrés for Cruise Ships
Day Trip Details
We'll begin this day trip after meeting at the Acajutla Cruise Terminal at the time your boat docks. Once we're ready, we'll go on a pleasant 1-hour drive. Let's go!
During the journey, we'll see some impressive volcanic landscapes and charming villages in this part of El Salvador. Cameras at the ready? Before you know it, we'll reach our first destination: the San Andrés Archaeological Site. Once we've arrived, we'll head into this ancient Mayan city, partially covered by the remnants of eruptions from the nearby Laguna Caldera volcano.
As we tell you about the millennia-old history of San Andrés, we'll walk amongst the temples and squares where ceremonies used to take place. Curious about what it would've been like to live in this city? We'll tell you all about it as we visit the pyramids and palaces built using adobe, plaster, gravel, and even volcanic ash. Without a doubt, this is one of the most unique archaeological sites in Mesoamerica.
Next, we'll make our way to Joya de Cerén, known as Central America's Pompeii. This area declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is for many archaeologists the best-preserved region in Central America. We'll discuss its conservation and history as we stroll around the houses and cellars, and even see some objects on display since their discovery and excavation. Did you know that this site was buried under volcanic remains for almost 1400 years?
After this final visit, we'll begin the journey back to our initial meeting point, where we'll say our goodbyes after a total of 5.5 hours.
