Greek History: A Tour of Ancient Macedonia
Greek History: A Tour of Ancient Macedonia
Meet us in Salonica, at the meeting point of your choice, to kick off our day trip through Ancient Macedonia as we visit different archeological sites in Greece!
Our first stop is the famed Pella archeological site, the birthplace of Alexander the Great. We'll tour the full 2,500 square meters (26,909 square feet) of archeological grounds and see the symposium halls. Pay close attention to the details on the mosaic floors, preserved since the 4th century, that depict beautiful scenes of gods and heroes in Greek mythology. Alongside our knowledgeable guide, we'll learn all the intricacies surrounding the former historic capital of Macedonia.
Leaving Pella behind, we'll head to Edessa, a city whose name in Greek means "tower in the water." Here, we'll stroll through the town and see the Karano waterfall, the largest in all of Greece. Falling from a height of 70 meters (229 feet), we'll enjoy a moment taking in the surrounding natural beauty. From here, we'll walk along the riverbanks next to the winding rivers that flow beneath picturesque bridges and around natural parks that characterize the region.
Next up, we'll give you 1.5 hours of free time to enjoy lunch at any of the local restaurants nearby. Once we've got full stomachs, we'll head to Naousa, for the last leg of our tour. Here, we'll get familiar with the area's wine tourism traditions.
We'll arrive at a winery for an informative tour of the grounds, as our guide offers a detailed explanation of the xinomavro wine-making process. Then, of course, we'll enjoy a wine tasting at the winery, paired with a selection of aperitifs. A perfect end to a full day!
Then, after having experienced a day full of history and culture, we'll return to the meeting point in Salonica, arriving about 9.5 hours later.
