Day Trip to Vergina & Veria
Day Trip to Vergina & Veria
We'll meet next to the Statue of Venizelos and embark on this excursion to Vergina and Veria. We'll leave Thessaloniki behind to discover two cities brimming with history and culture. Let's get started!
First up is Veria, a city known for its religious history. Fun fact: St. Paul preached there on his second missionary journey. Here, you can enjoy 1 hour of free time to explore the Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, and stroll through the old quarters of this Greek city.
Next, we'll head to Vergina, known in ancient times as Aegae or Egas and the first capital of the ancient Macedonian Kingdom. Upon arrival, we'll head to the New Museum of Aigai, a space dedicated to the history of ancient Macedonia. Here, you'll be captivated by the exhibits showcasing artefacts unearthed from the ancient city of Egas!
Our next stop will be at the Museum of the Royal Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Plus, we'll visit standout funerary monuments, such as the royal tomb of Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great. Then, beneath the burial mound, we'll see gold treasures dating back to the 4th century BC.
Once we've finished exploring the tomb, you'll have free time to grab yourself a bite to eat.
Finally, we'll bring our day in Vergina and Veria by returning to the meeting point in Thessaloniki, arriving 7 hours later.
