ETIAS: The New Travel Authorization for Europe

The world is constantly moving, and the only constant is change itself. The tourism sector is no different, and travel regulations are not far behind. In 2025, a new travel requirement will enter the scene: the European Travel Information and Authorization, or ETIAS. This new innovative system is set to change the game for European tourism, as travelers will now be required to have travel authorization to enter the Schengen Zone.
What is ETIAS?
ETIAS is a travel authorization created by the European Union that will simplify the entry process for travelers to the Schengen Area. It’s a real game-changer to making security and immigration procedures super efficient. At the same time, it still allows the openness and accessibility to travelers that Europe is known for. This new travel authorization is available as an online service. So you can apply for a digital travel authorization easily, making your travel smooth and easy from start to finish.
How do I apply for an ETIAS?
One of the best parts about the new travel authorization is that you can apply completely online. No visit to an embassy or consulate is necessary! That two-day trip to your nearest embassy that’s several states over? Forget about it; with the ETIAS, travel is completely hassle-free. Apply online via the official webpage or the mobile app.
The form itself is straightforward and user-friendly. It simply requires basic information such as your legal name, birthdate, passport number, and reason for traveling to the Schengen Area. With this information, your application is ready to be submitted!
What is the ETIAS for?
It’s safe to say security is one of everybody’s concerns when traveling, especially internationally. For this reason, this travel authorization will serve as a security protocol for entering tourists. Each applicant will be subject to an individual investigation to be cross-referenced with international security databases. This way, European authorities can identify potential risk factors and take appropriate actions while ensuring fast, easy, and safe entry for travelers coming to enjoy everything Europe offers.
How long is my ETIAS valid for?

Once approved, your ETIAS is valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. This means that travelers who receive an ETIAS travel authorization do not need to repeat the application process to enter any country within the Schengen Zone. So, one ETIAS authorization grants you various entries for up to 3 years or until your passport expires.
Who needs to apply for an ETIAS?
With the travel authorization, you can enjoy visa-free travel to all countries within the Schengen Zone. If you’re a citizen of a country that doesn’t require a visa to travel to the EU, you’ll need an ETIAS travel authorization. If you plan to travel through the Schengen Area for up to 90 days, you must also apply for an ETIAS travel authorization.
Which countries require an ETIAS?
The European Travel Information and Authorization System has declared that if you’re traveling into the following Schengen countries, as well as Bulgaria, Romania, and Cyprus, you’ll need to present an ETIAS travel authorization: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain.
How much does it cost to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization?

Any citizen over 18 years old can apply for an ETIAS travel authorization. With your application, you must pay online a fee of 7€ using a credit or debit card. The application fee is waived for those under 18.
How long after I apply will I receive my ETIAS?
Most ETIAS applications are processed within minutes, so you can expect an answer almost right away. However, on some occasions, application processing can take up to 48 to 72 hours, after which you’ll receive an email regarding your status. Filling out the application form itself takes between 10 and 15 minutes.
Do citizens from the U.S., Canada, or the U.K. need an ETIAS?
Yes, citizens from the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom must apply for an ETIAS to be granted entry into the Schengen Zone.
When does the ETIAS requirement start?
The ETIAS requirements were announced some years ago, however, its implementation continues to be postponed. The latest information as informed by the European Travel Information and Authorization System, states that the travel requirement will come into effect in mid-2025.
